I was so terrified during that movie that I literally was shaking for 2 hours. I covered my ears, my eyes, anything not to have to watch the terror. It was one of those movies where everyone screamed in unison at the scary parts. The music alone made my skin crawl.
At the end of the movie the boys , yes the cool football players, were too scared to walk home. So they came to my house. I couldn't let them in because my Dad would know, by the terror in their eyes, that we had defied his orders of not seeing the movie. So we threw them blankets and pillows out of my second story bedroom window. They slept outside.
For months after seeing "Halloween" I checked inside of my closet and under my bed before I went to sleep . Yes, I even turned down babysitting jobs because I was still so terrified.
In today's world the movie "Halloween" is probably not that scary. Our brains have become so desensitized to violence. Back in 1979 it was terrifying.
I recently read an article that I found absolutely fascinating. It was on the myths of satan. In the article the author reminds us that God is omnipresent. Satan is not. He does not have horns nor does he live underground. Actually, Jesus said He saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning (Luke 10:18)—referring to the moment when the enemy was cast out of heaven. In fact, the Bible says the devil is a master of clever disguises, and that he prefers to appear as "an angel of light" (see 2 Cor. 11:14). "Without spiritual discernment, most people don't even recognize that the devil is working because he is so cunning and attractive." says J. Lee Grady of Charisma Magazine.
Satan posts his demons in various areas, but satan himself is not watching you 24 hours a day. He can't. He doesn't have the ability to be all places at all times like God does. Satan cannot detect you. Can his demons play off of your emotions? Absolutely! They can torment your areas of insecurity. But if you are saved they can not get inside your brain.Honestly, if you are in Christ, you are hidden in Him. (see Col. 3:3)
So this poses the question to Christians: to celebrate Halloween or not celebrate Halloween? If satan is not actually able to watch us 24 hours a day then should we be fearful to celebrate a satanic holiday?
Kirk Cameron, an outspoken evangelical Christian, was recently quoted as saying “Halloween gives you a great opportunity to show how Christians celebrate the day that death was defeated, and you can tell the story of how every ghost, goblin, witch and demon was trounced the day Jesus rose from the grave. Clearly no Christians ought to be glorifying death, because death was defeated.”He went on to say “If you go back to old church calendars, especially Catholic calendars, they recognize the holiday All Saints Day, with All Hallows Eve the day before, when they would remember the dead. That’s all tied to Halloween.”
That sounds good in theory. However if you understand that the catholic church was founded on pagan principles then you realize Halloween may not be something to toy with. Many Christians, catholics alike, have opted for church Harvest Festivals or Trick or Trunks in the church parking lots. My own children participated in many of these.
If we dig deeper into the bible we find that satan is not afraid of religious people. Actually the devil is quite comfortable hanging around religious buildings. That is why Paul warned us that in the last days, people who say they are Christians, will fall away from the faith, "paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons" (1 Tim. 4:1). Some of the most demonic paganistic acts have occurred in church buildings when Christians turned away from the truth. So when we bring trick or treating into our churches are we attracting satan's demons? Scripture says we are.
I really don't know where I stand on this issue. Honestly, I love handing out candy to my neighbors precious children. I have wonderful memories of hanging out with friends and taking our children trick or treating. Our neighborhood was always so much fun on Halloween. Yet I believe that God's word is true and relevant to our lives today. He's telling us to rest in Him and not the world.
When you see all of the crazy be-headings on TV, mass murders, serial killers, rapists, cannibals, and psychopaths running around you have to know they are demon possessed. No sane person would do such horrendous acts. So, why would we dress up in folly and actually give crazy demon possessed people and spirits a reason to celebrate? A reason to follow us? A reason to seduce us away from The Lord?
I know some of you will read this, some may not finish it, and think "She is the crazy one. Far too radical for me". Remember, Jesus was considered a radical as were His disciples.
Tonight we will deliver treats to our neighbors children's homes. Probably hand out candy from 5:30-6:30. Then we will turn off our lights and go have a wonderful dinner with friends. We will celebrate family, faith, and friendship.
